The Craft & Candle Magick
I have long been interested in witchcraft.
The idea of a casting a spell to bring to you your most desired things in life really appealed to me, especially in my teenage years. I would occasionally flick through the green hard back book on my parents bookshelf that had magic spells in it, many times tempted to have a go at creating my dream man a la Sally Owens in Practical Magic. But I was always wary that something bad could happen. Maybe a fear of the unknown or maybe worried that I would unwittingly do harm to others. I mean if you really think about it, in Practical Magic Sally, played by Sandra Bullock, casts a spell as a child to find a perfect man that was practically impossible in order to stop herself from getting hurt....
‘Young Sally Owens: He will hear my call a mile away. He will whistle my favorite song. He can ride a pony backwards.
Young Gillian Owens: What are you doing?
Young Sally Owens: Summoning up a true love spell called Amas Veritas. He can flip pancakes in the air. He'll be marvelously kind. And his favorite shape will be a star. And he'll have one green eye and one blue.
Young Gillian Owens: Thought you never wanted to fall in love.
Young Sally Owens: That's the point. The guy I dreamed of doesn't exist. And if he doesn't exist I'll never die of a broken heart.’
What then what happens.. she grows up, falls in love, marries and has children and then said husband dies in a freak accident and she is left heartbroken. Until that is, the man she had wished for with the different coloured eyes walks into her life and makes her happy again. But, what if by casting that spell what she didn’t realise was that she was actually going to cause pain by causing the death of the man that had fathered her children, in order to make way for the spell bound love to walk into her life?
I do believe if you want something bad enough you can make it happen, whether it be via intentions or manifestation goal setting, but there is something wonderfully curious when it comes to creating a magic spell.
Candle magick is driven by the element of fire which represents transformation. Fire changes everything it interacts with, wood into ash, water to steam etc. This transformational energy is what you’re channeling in candle magick, encouraging and accelerating changes in your life.
Candle magick, like most magic, is best done after dark. To draw something to you, begin the spell on a new moon. If you wish to draw something towards yourself, write its name from the top of the candle to the bottom.
Whilst we are nearing Valentine’s Day you can conduct a simple love spell by charging a candle with magickal intention: Simply communicate your will to it through words, dance, song, or even telepathically, then light the wick. When the candle has burned completely, your spell has been cast.
A few things to note when conducting candle magick...
DON’T: Ever intend harm to others.
DON'T: Create unrealistic expectations
DON'T: Be vague.
DON'T: Obsess over your spell's outcome.
DO: Trust that your spell will work.
DO: Research correspondences.
DO: Stay present.
DO: Remember the law of threefold return.

And finally, I do have a little story from my school days of one of the times I did try to use magick in a way that I am not so proud of.... it may just be a coincidence but at the time I did scare myself with the power I felt I had created.
I had a thing for those fuzzy haired trolls in the 90s and had a little collection going on. There was one in particular that I felt had some sort of magical powers. She was my first troll and I felt I was connected to this little doll in her little blue swim suit and pink sticky up hair.
I had this maths teacher at school who being an ex grammar school teacher was very ‘old school’ methods with his teaching. He scared the bejesus out of me with his quick fire ‘times table’ questions at the beginning of the lessons and I often felt very nervous in his presence which just left me worrying the whole lesson instead of learning. So one Sunday at the end of a half term break, dreading my return to school because of my Monday morning maths lesson I decided to sit and put my troll to use. Holding her in my hands, stroking her pink hair I set my intentions... my wish was for Mr Dickinson to not be my teacher anymore. Monday morning soon came and so did the maths lesson. Waiting in line outside the room we were greeted by the head of department and a supply teacher who told us that Mr Dickinson would not be in school for the foreseeable. He had had an accident breaking both of his legs. He never did return to teach us and retired later that year. Yes I did feel guilty, and yes I also soon retired my very powerful troll from wish making! Moral to this story... be very careful what you wish for!!
